Fishing Key West Reef & Wrecks: Rich Underwater Bounty

Key West, a charming island located at the southernmost tip of Florida, is known for its crystal-clear waters and abundance of marine life. But what many don't know is that it's also a prime destination for fishing enthusiasts. With miles of barrier reef just off the coast, Key West offers a unique and exciting opportunity for wreck and reef fishing. The Florida Barrier Reef, also known as the Great Florida Reef, is the third largest coral barrier reef system in the world. Stretching over 170 miles from the Dry Tortugas National Park to Miami, this diverse ecosystem is home to an incredible variety of fish species. And Key West is lucky enough to have a portion of this reef located just a few miles offshore. Reef fishing in Key West offers anglers the chance to catch a wide range of fish, including snapper, grouper, amberjack, and many more. These species are attracted to the reefs not only for shelter but also because they provide an abundance of food sources. And as a bonus, reef fishing in Key West also allows for the opportunity to hook larger game fish that are attracted to the smaller fish on the reef. In addition to the barrier reef, Key West is also home to numerous shipwrecks. These wrecks not only provide an interesting glimpse into history but also serve as hotspots for fishing. These artificial reefs attract a variety of fish, including snapper, grouper, cobia, and even shark. Wreck fishing in Key West offers anglers the chance to test their skills against larger and more powerful game fish. It also allows for the opportunity to catch multiple species in one location. Whether you're an experienced angler or just starting out, wreck fishing in Key West is an adventure not to be missed. This is a great fishing trip to catch some lunch and is perfect for all ages.

Private Boat to Dry Tortugas National Park: Exclusive Island Escape

Located about 70 miles west of Key West, Florida lies an archipelago known as the Dry Tortugas National Park. This remote and isolated park is only accessible by sea plane, ferry, or private boat. While all three options will get you to the park, having a private boat allows for a more personalized and immersive experience.

While sea planes and ferries offer convenient transportation to the Dry Tortugas, they can be limiting in terms of time and exploration. With a private boat, you have the freedom to venture out and explore all the islands within the park at your own pace. This allows for a more authentic experience where you can truly appreciate the beauty and diversity of the area.

Lobster Mini Season

Lobster Mini Season is the last Wednesday and Thursday of July every year. It used to be for the locals only and has become two days where the public can get out there and catch their lobsters before the commercial season begins. Usually this means the lobsters are plentiful and catching ones "limit" is fairly easy.

Unique Explorations In The Florida Keys

South Florida is a paradise for wildlife lovers. Exotic marine life like bottlenose dolphins and black tip sharks are common sightings. Snorkelers can see parrot fish, tangs, spiny lobster, hogfish, barracuda, stingray, angelfish, and many other colorful fish underwater. Sea turtle sightings are common during nesting season.

Sand bar hopping is a popular activity, appreciated by locals and visitors alike. When the tides change, islands like Boca Grande Key, Snipes Point, Marvin Key, Marquesas Key, and Woman Key are uncovered long enough to entertain explorers. Take a guided tour with a knowledgeable local guide and hop between sandbars for maximum fun. Be sure to take a cooler full of drinks and a picnic lunch to enjoy.
